The premiere of Jodie Foster’s new film The Beaver took place on Wednesday at SXSW in Austin without its star Mel Gibson.

The film which tells the story of a depressed father who chooses a beaver hand puppet as his sole means of communication stars Mel Gibson, a man who has been known lately to let voicemail speak for him.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Jodie Foster had the following to say when questioned about how the audience will react to seeing a film starring Mr Gibson;

“I just have to ask everybody, can you see a film and appreciate the artist for his work? And if anything, I think anybody who comes to see the film and understands Mel’s extraordinary performance in the movie can’t go away untouched by his humanity.”

Sometimes a story comes along that creates its own headline…and yes folks this is the story.

Unfortunately for Mr Gibson there is a little more bad luck that he’s going to have to deal with. It appears that he’s been the victim of some petty crime with someone stealing the final cut DVD copy of his latest film, ‘The Beaver’.

It seems that Mr Gibson had placed the screener copy of the film in his letterbox so that a courier could pickup and return it to the studio. Alas when the courier arrived, there was no DVD to be found.

Police are currently investigating and treating it as petty theft because “it’s a $10 DVD”
